The Black Fantastic is the following:
- Black cosmology (worldview and belief system) - where a black person’s absence is brought back to life
- Echoes and threads of African cultures - that indicates a recreation of a lost order
- Deals with catastrophes that create cracks in the established order, allowing a system to survive where it might have otherwise died
- Highlights the preposterousness, the instability, the inconsistency of the “normal”
- Gives life to what history denied, gives voice to what history has silenced
- This other knowledge or perception of another world or another way, always discredited but still there (recall Morrison video clip on the Flying African)
- Normalizing spirits, signs, and omens
- Questions limits, borders, boundaries
- Fantastic as therapy to bridge the gap between colonization and African American experience/ identity
- Fantastic as healing, recovery and remembering
